Sudan’s President,  Omar al-Bashir has been re-elected with 94% of the vote, the National Electoral Commission said.

Bashir’s victory only means that he can now extend his 25 year rule by another five years. He was expected to win the elections.

Voter turnout was low despite a nation-wide one-day extension.

Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for  ordering a genocide in the Darfur conflict. He denies the charges.

Western countries, including the US, Britain and Norway, have criticized the polls for not being free and fair.

He came to power in 1989 as a brigadier in the Sudanese army . Since then Bashir has been elected three times as President.
