China’s president Xi Jinping delivers speech as Asia Africa summit

Chinese President Xi Jinping has delivered a speech, with the aim of carrying on the Bandung Spirit and promoting the common development of the two vibrant continents

Apart from cooperation between the two continents, President Xi also called for developing countries to join forces to speed up development and improve people’s livelihood.

He also said developed countries should offer more assistance to the developing world to narrow the gap.

On his part he pledged Beijing’s support for the developing world.

World leaders and representatives from about 100 countries and international organizations are gathered in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

The meeting opened under the theme “Strengthening South-South Cooperation to Promote World Peace and Prosperity”.

Over the next five years, China will also promote people to people exchanges, offering 100-thousand positions for people from developing countries in Asia and Africa to train and study in the mainland.

Highlights of his speech:

  • China will grant the least developed countries with which it has diplomatic ties, zero-tariff on 97 percent of imported products within the year. It will continue to offer assistance to developing countries with no political strings attached.
  • China is willing to join hands with all parties concerned to implement the “One Belt, One Road” initiatives and set up the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
President Xi Jinping also met with his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo.

In addition to the Asian-African Summit, the two presidents discussed ties between the two nations.

Xi Jinping stressed that the two sides should work together to realize past agreements and strengthen cooperation in various fields.

Widodo echoed these thoughts, saying Indonesia would spare no efforts to deepen economic, diplomatic and cultural ties.

After the meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of agreements on railway projects.
