400 migrants feared dead off the Coast of Libya
400 people are feared dead off the coast of Libya after their boat capsized according to international aid organisation, Save the Children.
Survivors of the capsized migrant boat told the aid group Save the Children that the 400 people are believed to have drowned while on their way to Italy.
The death of the migrants adds to the growing number of migrants who die at sea trying to seek a better livelihood in European countries.
The coast guard had helped to rescue some 144 people on Monday and immediately launched an air and sea search operation in hopes of finding others.
No other survivors or bodies have been recovered.
The survivors told the Save the Children that “many young boys, probably minors” were likely among the victims.
The Coast guards said there are many more people who may have died in the accident given the size of the boat they were traveling in.
The European Union says that more than 7,000 migrants have been rescued from the Mediterranean since Friday.
Survivors say that the latest tragedy happened after the boat, carrying about 550 migrants in total, overturned a day after leaving Libya.
In the last three days alone, more than 5,100 migrants have landed in Italy, accrding to a ststement by Save the Children Italy.
