President Robert Mugabe receives a 21-gun salute at his state visit to South Africa
Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe has arrived in South Africa for his first official state visit to the country in over 20 years. He was accompanied by his wife, Grace Mugabe.
Mugabe’s first state visit to South Africa was in August 1994 . Since then the two countries have undertaken state visits to each other’s countries severally in the past few days.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation said in a statement that the purpose of the visit was to strengthen economic cooperation.
The statement said the two country’s presidents will sign an agreement to increase trade.
South Africa’s exports to Zimbabwe amount to about 2 billion dollars, while Zimbabwe exports goods worth nearly 170 million dollars to South Africa.
The business forum is to start tomorrow, Thursday 9th April.
Earlier on this year, Mugabe was appointed African Union chairperson and Southern African Development Community.
