Read < 1 minute

Joseph Mutinda, a Kenyan marathon runner and winner of the 2014 Austin Marathon, has admitted to the United States Anti-Doping Agency that he used various prohibited substances over the past several years.

He’s accepted a three-year sanction as a result of his admission and testing positive for prohibited substances on two separate occasions.

His first positive test came during an in-competition urine test on Feb. 16, 2014 at the Austin Marathon. His second positive test came from an out-of-competition sample taken by the USADA on May 3, 2014.

The substances Mutinda used are not allowed under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing and the International Association of Athletics Federations anti-doping rules.

Mutinda has been ruled ineligible as of Feb. 16, 2014, disqualifying his first-place result in the Austin Marathon. He finished the race in 2 hours, 14 minutes and 16 seconds.

He has also been disqualified from results obtained on or after Dec. 15, 2013, the first day he administered erythropoietin.
