Uganda Battles Typhoid Outbreak

Health authorities in Kampala are battling an outbreak of typhoid in the capital and two other central districts. As of Monday at least 513 cases had been identified in Kampala and the two districts. So far two people have been confirmed dead.

Kampala Capital City Authority and Ministry of Health officials have advised the public to avoid eating cold foods, vegetables, and fruits and drink safe water to prevent further spread of the disease.

Typhoid is a disease transmitted through eating food or drinking water that is contaminated with stool. The bacteria can survive for weeks in water of dried sewages.

Across the world, millions of people are infected annually by typhoid, and about 200,000 of them die. Typhoid is curable but some bacteria’s are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics.

Some simple ways to prevent typhoid may include; boiling water before drinking it, keep flies away from food, Peel fruits and vegetables skin off before consuming and Cook all food thoroughly and eat it while it is hot among other measures.
