BERLIN — A woman in Germany is set to make history, becoming the oldest woman ever to give birth to a set of quadruplets, according to a report. According to the Daily Mail, Annegret Raunigk, 65 years old and a school teacher from Berlin.
The Daily Mail reports Annegret Raunigk, who is 65-year-old and a schoolteacher from Berlin, is in the 21st week of her pregnancy. Her pregnancy is as a result of artificial insemination using both donated sperm and eggs.
The woman said she was “shocked” when an ultrasound indicated she was to give birth to quadruplets, the Daily Mail reported. Her gynecologist initially suggested a “selective reduction,” during which one or more foetuses would have been aborted, but she declined.
According to the report, Raunigk is already the mother of 13 other children, the oldest of whom is 44. The 13 children are by five different fathers — and she also has seven grandchildren.
The Daily Mail reports Raunigk considers herself “still quite fit” and capable to raise the children. Raunigk has previously made headlines when she gave birth to her daughter at the age of 55.
The Daily Mail reports Raunigk has defended her decisions to get pregnant later in life, saying, “I think one needs to decide for oneself and not listen too much to the opinions of others.”
