Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta launched a 27km road construction project that is expected to ease traffic congestion in Kenya’s capital.
The Chinese Roads and Bridge Corporation designed the road and will construct the $599 million highway. The company is also expected to maintain the road for 30 years before handing it over to the Kenyan Government.
The planned Nairobi Expressway will run alongside the existing Mombasa Road. A 15 km stretch will be at ground level while the remaining 11.2 km will be elevated as it approaches the CBD and the area of Westlands.
During the flagging off, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said the road will be a game changer once it opens to traffic in December 2021.
The project is also expected to create employment opportunities for people in Nairobi and Machakos counties.
Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng witnessed the unveiling of the plaque by Kenyatta on Mombasa road to mark the beginning of the works on site.
