5.6 million people risk starvation in areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency
New Boko Haram attacks have created a major hunger crisis in Africa’s Lake Chad region with malnutrition reaching “catastrophic” levels in some areas as reported by the World Food Programme.
According to the UN food agency more than 5.6 million people do not have enough food to eat.
WFP warns insecurity could lead to prolonged hunger, as attacks in Chad intensify, and continue in Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger.
Boko Haram insurgents, who have been fighting for six years to establish an Islamist state in northeast Nigeria, have stepped up attacks on neighbouring countries which joined a Nigerian offensive against the Islamist group.
