370 people have lost their jobs in Zambia after a copper producer in the country terminated contracts with three mining firms working on some of its operation sites, a company official said.
Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), one of the largest integrated copper producers in Africa, terminated contracts with companies that were working at its Nchanga mine in Chingola District, Copperbelt Province.
The company’s general manager for corporate affairs, Eugene Chungu, confirmed that the contracts with the affected firms had expired and would not be renewed.
Chungu said the Nchanga mine would resume operations as soon as the Indian firm stocks enough acid to treat the materials from the underground.
The company, KCM, a subsidiary of India’s Vedanta Resources.
