South Africa has marked three years since the tragic Marikana Massacre. Police shot dozens of miners and three years on, several questions remain regarding the tragedy.

The Marikana massacre started as a wildcat strike at a mine owned by Lonmin in the Marikana area in 2012.

Thirty-four miners were killed during the strikes – the bloodiest massacre by South African security forces since the end of racial apartheid.

The strike is considered a seminal event in modern South African history and was followed by similar strikes at other mines across South Africa.

These events collectively made 2012 the most protest-filled year in the country since the end of apartheid regime.
