At least 24 people were killed and 18 others injured after a bus plunged into a ravine in Ain Snoussi in northern Tunisia on Sunday.
A statement from the Interior ministry said that the bus, which was carrying 43 people, veered off the road, crashed through an iron barrier and fell into a ravine.
The Tourism ministry said the bus was headed to the northern mountain town of Ain Draham, a popular tourist destination, which is near the border with Algeria.
Tunisia’s Health ministry said that the victims of the crash were aged between 20 and 30. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
The cause of the crash is yet to be established though roads in Tunisia are notoriously dangerous and dilapidated.
Tunisian President Kais Saied and Prime Minister Youssef Chahed have both visited the scene of the accident, which is a black spot according to a civil defense official.
The accident is regarded as one of the country’s worst road accidents.
Tunisia had the second worst traffic death rate per capita in North Africa, behind Libya, according to statistics from the World Health Organization in 2015.
Tunisian authorities acknowledge the magnitude of road accidents in the country but argue that national security problems have prevented them from adequately addressing the issue.
