Air Zimbabwe (AirZim) has retrenched 200 workers as it restructures in order to stay afloat, reports the Herald.
“We have retrenched 200 employees out of 424 employees and those who were affected are going with their packages,” said AirZim chairperson Chipo Dyanda.
The remaining employees will be on performance based contracts for the next six months, with those that fail to produce to be dismissed according to AirZim chairperson Chipo Dyanda.
She further added that an audit on staff skills, qualification and salary will be done as well, “We have hired a private consultancy to do a staff audit in terms of checking qualifications to see if people are in the right positions.”
The airline is on a new business strategy that will see it grow and promote Harare capital city as a getaway to travellers.
“The restructuring exercise is coming on the backdrop of a strategic plan to give the company a different business model so that Harare is not viewed as a destination but a transit to other parts of the world,” said the chairperson.
Air Zimbabwe has been making losses for years, it has debts of more than $300 million.
