20 abducted by unknown gunmen in Uganda
At least 20 Ugandans were abducted by unknown gunmen in the north western district of Yumbe which borders South Sudan
A farm land was raided around 2 am on Monday night sparking fear in the villagers according to resident and security officials reports the Monitor.
A search is underway as the whereabouts of the abductees remain unknown however security authorities believe that they were likely taken to South Sudan.
“We are also working jointly with security operatives in South Sudan to ensure those people are returned,” Said Lt Andrew Kandiho, The District Internal Security Officer (DISO)
Lt Kandiho further said that the gunmen had earlier attacked another village and stole goats and food stuff. Uganda is using intelligence networks at the borders and the South Sudan government.
According to The Monitor the abductions are linked to increased disturbance in parts of South Sudan closer to the Ugandan border, attacks that authorities blame on forces loyal to renegade SPLA general Peter Gatdet Yaka, who chairs the Provisional Political Committee (FDP) and Provisional Military Council (SSAF).
“Rebels from South Sudan have dramatically escalated their attacks, abducting more than 200 people, including 54 children in the first two months of this year,” a security source said on condition of anonymity due to sensitivity of the matter.
