Ten people from the same extended family in Mberengwa District have died after eating poisonous mushrooms, state media reported Tuesday.

The Herald said the family from Makuta Village took the mushrooms at home and three died last Wednesday while 11 others were hospitalized in Bulawayo.

However, seven more – six children and an adult – died at the weekend, Mpilo Central Hospital clinical director Solwayo Ngwenya said.

“I want to warn members of the public to desist from consuming mushrooms they randomly pick from the bush. To avoid endangering their lives people must avoid buying even those mushrooms that are being sold by vendors on the streets,” he said.

Many Zimbabweans harvest mushrooms during the rainy season which they use as relish to go with their staple food sadza, a thick porridge cooked from grains or rice.
