At least 10 people were killed and 87 others rescued after a boat capsized in Tanzania’s Lake Tanganyika on Thursday.

Martin Otieno, the Kigoma regional police commander, told Xinhua by telephone that the boat capsized at around noon after it was hit by a powerful storm.

“Police and other security agencies are still searching to establish if there could be more victims because the boat had no record of number of passengers,” he said.

On July 16, Tanzania’s weather agency warned of strong winds and high waves in Lake Tanganyika. The weather forecast said strong winds and high waves were likely to disrupt fishing activities and marine transport.

On June 25, at least nine people were killed and 51 others injured after a boat capsized in Lake Tanganyika.
