A footballer was bizarrely sent off the field of play for farting during a match in which his team went on to lose 6-2.

Adam Lindin Ljungkvist, a left back for Swedish seventh tier football club Pershagen SK was shown a second yellow card in the dying minutes of the game for breaking wind.

The 25-year-old said he had a bad stomach which prompted him to let the gas out, to which he received a second yellow card that ended his involvement in the game.

“Yes, I was shocked, it’s the strangest thing I have ever experienced in football.”

“I asked the referee ‘what am I not allowed to break wind a little?’ He replied ‘no’…I don’t get it but maybe he thought I farted in my hand and threw the fart at him. But I did not.”

Explaining his decision, the referee Dany Kako said: “I perceived it as deliberate provocation. He did it on purpose and it was inappropriate. Therefore, he received a [second] yellow card.”
