Kenya’s main opposition leader Raila Odinga has reiterated that he will not participate in Thursday’s repeat presidential election, urging his supporters to hold prayers away from polling stations.
Odinga was speaking at a rally in the capital, Nairobi, just a day before the repeat poll.
The East African country’s August 8 presidential vote was nullified by the Supreme Court, which cited malpractices in the tallying and transmission processes.
The court ordered a repeat within 60 days of the September 1 ruling, with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission announcing an October 17 date before postponing it to October 26.
Odinga’s NASA coalition has been organizing nationwide protests to demand reforms at the IEBC, particularly resignations of officers it accuses of engaging in malpractices in the August 8 election.
IEBC however says the election will go on as planned.
The ruling Jubilee Party too is adamant the vote will continue with or without Odinga’s name on the ballot.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Supreme Court failed to hear a case seeking to stop the elections, after all but one judge failed to show up for the hearing.
