New Ethiopian PM in Kenya for two day state visit

Read < 1 minute

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is in Kenya for a two day state visit. Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta will be holding talks with the new Ethiopian leader on regional integration, peace and security.

President Kenyatta had in April invited Ahmed for a State Visit to discuss ways of enhancing relations between the two nations.

In an invitation letter delivered by Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma, the President stated that the two countries have always worked together from the beginning.

However recent fighting between Ethiopian communities along the Kenyan border has raised concerns over border security between the two countries.

Abiye Ahmed was appointed Prime Minister of Ethiopia after Haile Mariam Desalegn resigned. He is now facing several challenges at home due to on-going inter-ethnic clashes. Kenya’s president now says he is committed to enhancing partnerships with Ethiopia and to promote trade between two countries.

This will be his third foreign visit, after Djibouti and Sudan, since his swearing-in on 2 April.
