Kenya’s Political Stability: Attorney-General dismiss claims of a looming constitutional crisis

Read < 1 minute

Kenya’s Attorney-General has dismissed claims of a looming constitutional crisis as the country prepares for a repeat of a presidential election.

There have been claims by the opposition that a caretaker government would have to be formed if an election failed to take place before the end of October.

Githu Muigai said according to the constitution, President Kenyatta enjoys all the powers bestowed on his office until the next head of state is sworn in. However, the Constitution restricts President Kenyatta from carrying out some functions such as the nomination or appointment of judges, appointment or dismissal of public officers and conferring the power of mercy or honours.
