England Manager Gareth Southgate has unveiled his 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup scheduled to kick off on 14 June, with only one Arsenal player making the cut.
The Russian tournament will be the first time the England side will heads to a World Cup without record setting Manchester United great Wayne Rooney, who retired from international football in August 2017.
Other than Rooney, Southgate omitted big-name stars from the squad, including Manchester City’s Joe Hart and Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere.
Forward Danny Welbeck is the only inclusion from Arsenal, possibly an indication of Arsenal’s poor show in the just ended 2017/18 season.
Fellow North London side Tottenham Hotspurs however have four players in the side; Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier and Harry Kane
Southgate also included Liverpool’s 19-year-old full back Trent Alexander-Arnold in the squad, who is yet to play for the England.
The Three Lions are pooled alongside Belgium, Panama and Tunisia in Group G, and will start their campaign on 18 June against the African side.
