Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang held talks on Wednesday with Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen in Addis Ababa.
Demeke said that the Chinese Foreign Minister’s first visit to Ethiopia at the beginning of the new year is of great significance to the relations between the two countries and Africa-China relations.
Demeke said that China has provided vital assistance to Ethiopia in overcoming challenges and achieving economic and social development. China upholds principles and speaks out in the international arena, and strongly supports Ethiopia in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We keep this in mind and look forward to working with China to enhance bilateral relations in an all-round way and expand practical cooperation in various fields such as digital economy, agriculture, and capacity building.
Qin Gang said that China and Ethiopia are comprehensive strategic cooperative partners. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations more than half a century ago, the two sides have firmly supported each other in safeguarding their respective core interests and in exploring their own development paths that work for their situations respectively, the strategic mutual trust between the two countries is increasing day by day.
Qin Gang said thanks to the solid political foundation and public opinion foundation of both sides, China-Ethiopia cooperation in various fields has developed rapidly and yielded fruitful results. Ethiopia actively participates in the joint construction of the “Belt and Road”, and China has been Ethiopia’s largest source of foreign direct investment and largest trading partner for many years. A large number of key cooperation projects such as the Addis-Djibouti Railway, the Addis Light Rail, Riverside Green Development, and the African Leadership Academy have been successfully completed or implemented. The two sides should take the opportunity of implementing the “Nine Programs” of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” to strengthen the alignment of development strategies, expand cooperation in various fields, create more new growth points, and bring more benefits to the well-being of people in both countries.
After the talks, the two sides signed a number of cooperation documents including the memorandum of understanding on political consultations between the foreign ministries of the two countries.
Qin said that China-Ethiopia relations are ushering in new development opportunities and broad prospects. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Ethiopian side to promote the traditional friendship between China and Ethiopia to produce more fruitful results, so as to benefit the two countries and the two peoples.
