Legendary marathoner Eliud Kipchoge stormed to victory on Sunday to win the 2022 Berlin Marathon in style, smashing the World Marathon Record by 30 seconds.

The Kenyan athlete produced a dominant performance throughout the race and crossed the finish line in a time of 02:01:09.

Fans thronged the streets of the German capital as Kipchoge and other top athletes lined up to battle for glory.

A few kilometers into the race, Kipchoge was already ahead of the sector’s fastest times, which he set in the same event in 2018.

The 37-year-old beat his own record of 2:01.39, which he set at the 2018 Berlin Marathon. Kipchoge’s compatriot Mark Korir took second place with a time of 2:05:58, with Ethiopia’s Tadu Abate taking third place with a time of 2:06:28.

“I’m so happy to break the World Record in Berlin. I planned to go out fast in the first half,” said Kipchoge.

“I am happy with my preparation and I think I was so fast because of the teamwork. Everything is down to teamwork,” he added.

In the women’s event, Tigist Assefa took victory with a course record time of 2:15:37. With her feat, she became the third-fastest female marathoner of all time.

Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru took second with a time of 2:18:00, the second fastest debut ever run in the competition’s history.

Ethiopia’s Tigist Abayechew clocked a time of 2:18:03 to take third position.
