Vitoria replaces Ehab Galal who was sacked in June after just three games in charge of the national team which performed dismally losing 2-0 to Ethiopia in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and 4-1 to South Korea in a friendly.

The 52-year-old Portuguese had a successful four-year spell with Benfica winning consecutive league titles in 2016 and 2017 and two domestic cups. He also coached Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr winning the Saudi League title and the Saudi Super Cup.

The last team he managed was Russian club Spartak Moscow whom he led to the Europa League play-offs in 2021.

Vitoria has also managed Portuguese sides Vitoria Guimaraes, Pacos Ferreira and Fatima.

Vitoria’s immediate task will be to guide The Pharaohs to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and his first competitive match will be a qualifying double header against Malawi in September.
