José Santos Peseiro is the new head coach of Nigeria’s men’s national team, the Super Eagles, succeeding Augustine Eguavoen who resigned in March after failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said Peseiro’s appointment will take immediate effect subject to the signing of agreed terms between the NFF and the Portuguese tactician.

The NFF added that Peseiro will be assisted by former Super Eagles striker Finidi George, U23 and African Nations Championship (CHAN) coach Salisu Yusuf and Usman Abdallah.

The 62-year-old’s first game in charge is expected to be a friendly against Mexico at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas on May 28.

The three-time African champions are scheduled to be in action less than a week later on June 2 when they take on Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Peseiro is a vastly experienced coach having managed several European clubs – like Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto and Panathinaikos – and the Saudi Arabian and Venezuelan national teams.
