Dani Carvajal is set to miss Real Madrid’s Super Cup final clash with Athletic Bilbao after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Madrid confirmed the defender’s positive result in a statement on Friday.

The development comes two days after he played in his side’s semi-final victory over rivals Barcelona in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side beat their Classico rivals 3-2 in extra time to earn their spot in the finals, while Bilbao emerged 2-1 victors over Atletico Madrid in the second semi-final game.

Carvajal’s positive test result is the latest among Los Blancos in a month, after a number of players also contracted the virus late December.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, midfielders Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga, as well as winger Vinicius Junior were on December 29 confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19.
