Nigerian troops have killed five gunmen in a recent encounter in north Nigeria’s Kaduna state, a state official said on Monday.

Samuel Aruwan, the commissioner for internal security and home affairs in the state, said in a brief statement troops based in the state received credible intelligence reports on the movement of the gunmen near the town of Kwanan Bataro in the Giwa local government area of the state.

The troops were mobilized immediately to engage the gunmen in the area and killed five of them in the encounter, said Aruwa, without mentioning when the encounter happened.

There have been a series of gunmen attacks in northern Nigeria in recent months, leading to deaths and kidnappings.
