A total of seven people were killed following a head-on collision involving a bus and truck in southwest Nigeria’s Ogun state at the weekend, road police confirmed on Monday.

The collision triggered a fire at the scene.

“The seven persons were burned beyond recognition, only to be identified with skulls; while the other three sustained various degrees of injuries,” said the road police commander.

Ahmed Umar, a commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the Ogun state, told reporters in the town of Ota that three others were injured and rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving
