South Africa will be missing the services of Angelo Davids for the second leg of the Canada Sevens in Edmonton this weekend after he was ruled out through injury.
Davids suffered a hand fracture during last weekend’s title-winning campaign in Vancouver. He was instrumental during the Blitzboks’ victory notching up 10 tries along the way, an individual record for the Vancouver event.
Selvyn Davids has been added to the Blitzboks squad as Angelo Davids’ replacement for the event having recovered from an injury that ruled him out from the initial trip two weeks ago.
Selvyn Davids said he was looking forward to joining up with the team and putting behind the disappointment of the Olympic Games in Tokyo where a high tackle saw his participation in the quarterfinal against Argentina end prematurely.
“It is never nice to replace someone who suffered injury, so I feel for Angelo, especially after such a fine performance in Vancouver.”
“I am pretty excited to join the guys, especially since the disappointment of not recovering in time to travel with them originally. They have played wonderful rugby in Vancouver, and I know the guys will be keen to keep that high standard of play going.”
South Africa, who come in again as favourites, are grouped in Pool A with Mexico, Hong Kong and Canada.
Vancouver Sevens finalists Kenya are in Pool B together with the United States, Spain and Chile, while Great Britain, Ireland, Germany and Jamaica are in Pool C.
