South Africa has started the development of a digital vaccination certificate to confirm that a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19.
However, Health Minister Dr. Joe Phaahla clarified that the country has not yet considered requiring so-called vaccine passports.
“As government, we have no intention to require people in future to produce this certificate to access public services. They may be useful to access entertainment spots but definitely not essential and public services,” Dr. Phaahla explained.
The government says the new certificate will be protected from fraud and users will be able to upload and print the certificate from a smartphone, tablet or similar device.
