Tunisia edges Côte d’Ivoire to retain FIBA AfroBasket title

Tunisia narrowly defeated Côte d’Ivoire 78-75 on Sunday in a thrilling final to win the 2021 AfroBasket title at the Kigali Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

Victory brought home a second consecutive FIBA Africa Championship and third overall for Tunisia who claimed their previous titles in 2011 and 2017.

Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for Les Éléphants who were contesting their sixth final and first since 2009. However, 12 years ago, the West Africans also lost the in final to Angola.

Both teams came into the final winning all their five matches including identical 75-65 wins against Cape Verde and Senegal, respectively.

However, Tunisia were favourites heading into the match not because they were defending champions who had half of the title-winning squad from four years ago but they also outclassed Cote d’Ivoire in two of their warm-up games in Tunisia.
