The Government of Mali has declared three days of national mourning following the Tuesday road accident that claimed 41 lives.
The decree signed by Mali president Colonel Assimi Goita read: “A national mourning of three (03) days, from Thursday August 5 2021, is declared throughout the national territory in tribute to the victims of the road traffic accident which occurred this Tuesday August 3 2021 in zambougou, 20 km from the city of segou.”
During this period, flags on all buildings will fly at half mast.
The 41 people lost their live when a truck carrying goods and market workers collided with a passenger bus, the transport ministry said.
The truck’s driver lost control after a tyre burst and the vehicle swerved into the path of the bus, State broadcaster ORTM reported.
Reuters reported that the force of the crash, which happened 20 kilometers from the town of Segou, sheared off the front section of the bus and scattered detritus across the road, according to photos and video shared online.
