Talk Africa: Youth and employment

According to the United Nations, Africa has the highest youth population of any continent in the world, and it’s projected to keep rising. Sadly, economic growth rates and job creation are not on par, leading to increased unemployment across the continent.

The COVID pandemic further exacerbated the situation, with businesses and the job market being some of the hardest-hit sectors around the world.

In a struggling economy, some innovative young people across have Africa have opted to create their own employment, becoming entrepreneurs and innovators, and have been highly successful in some cases.

July 15th has been set aside as world youth skills day, to recognize the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment and entrepreneurship. This week on the program we look at some of the challenges to youth employment in Africa and speak to some innovators who opted out of formal employment to blaze their own trail.
