Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur will face Cori “Coco” Gauff in the Round of 16 of the French Open after she survived a scare to defeat Magda Linette in three sets on Saturday.
Jabeur came from a set down to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 in just about an hour-and-a-half to book a date with the American teenager on Monday.
Jabeur appeared to take the advantage early in the first set when she broke serve in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. However, she then proceeded to drop her own serve twice in the next four games and though she saved a set point, the Pole eventually closed out the set 6-3.
With an upset on the cards, Jabeur jolted herself in a ruthless second set in which she hit 10 winners, won all her service points and converted three out of five break points, all the while committing just one unforced error to win 6-0.
The deciding set almost went the same way, but Linette managed to save four match points in the sixth game to avoid a double bagel and make it 5-1.
However, there was no denying Jabeur in the end as she converted her fifth match point to claim the set 6-1 and with it the match.
Jabeur is aiming to make the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam for just the second time has already matched her Round of 16 appearance at Roland Garros last year.
Gauff, seeded just one place above Jabeur, booked her place in the fourth round after her compatriot Jennifer Brady retired trailing 6-1.
The duo has met thrice before with the American winning twice while Jabeur has one victory, their most recent encounter in the Charleston Open quarterfinals in April.
The winner will face either 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens or Barbora Krejcikova.
