The Tunisian Maritime Guard on Monday intercepted 113 migrants of different nationalities off the country’s southeast coast, according to a statement released by the Defense Ministry.

The ministry said the group, consisting of people from Bangladesh, Sudan, Eritrea, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana and Nigeria were attempting to reach Italy on Sunday night. The boat in which they were traveling began to sink.

The number of attempts to reach Europe from the Tunisian coasts toward Italy has been increasing despite the strict measures taken by the Tunisian authorities to combat the problem.
