Egypt’s national football coach, Hossam El-Badry, has tested positive for COVID-19, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Sunday.

EFA noted that El-Badry tested positive after his daughter also returned positive test results for the disease.

The association said the 61-year-old has proceeded into self-quarantine in line with health guidelines.

El-Badry has served in his role since September 2019, replacing Javier Aguirre who had resigned some two months before.

The technician has not convened the national team since The Pharaoh’s beat Comoros 4-0 in Cairo to secure qualification to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which was delayed to January-February 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Egypt has recently seen a slight increase in new COVID-19 infections.

By Sunday, the country had reported 221,570 confirmed cases with 12,998 deaths.
