Tsunami warning issued as 7.2-magnitude earthquake shakes Japan

M6.0 earthquake recorded off eastern Japan CGTN

Japan’s meteorological agency on Saturday issued a tsunami advisory, after a strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast Japan on Saturday evening minutes after 6pm.

The quake hit at 6:09 pm (0909 GMT) in the Pacific waters off Miyagi region with a depth of 60 kilometers (37 miles), the JMA said, issuing an advisory for tsunami waves of around one meter.

In Miyagi Prefecture, the quake measured up to a strong 5 on the Japanese shindo scale to 7.

Those near coastal areas have also been advised to move to higher ground.
