Bazoum continues to lead in Niger’s presidential election runoff

Mohamed Bazoum, President of the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS-Tarayya), the ruling party, has increased his lead as vote-counting continues in the West African nation’s second round of presidential elections.

Data from the electoral commission showed Bazoum leading with 57.7% of the vote share, this being results from 210 out of 266 constituencies.

The run-off vote, meant to usher in Niger’s first transition of power from one democratically elected leader to another, was held on Sunday after neither Bazoum nor Democratic and Social Convention’s Mahamane Ousmane secured a majority in the first round in December.
