Zanzibar’s First Vice President, Seif Sharif Hamad has contracted the coronavirus, his party said Sunday.

The 77-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Tanzania’s semi-autonomous archipelago on Friday.

“His doctors have advised him to remain under strict medical supervision as he receives treatment against the coronavirus,” said Ado Shaibu, secretary-general of his party, Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT Wazalendo).

The communication from his party added that: “ACT Wazalendo we ask our party members, Zanzibaris and all Tanzanians, in general, to pray for Maalim Seif during this period in which he has been admitted to recover quickly to continue with his duties. We also reiterate our call for all Tanzanians to take steps to protect themselves against this disease”.

His wife and several aides are also being treated for COVID-19. Hamad’s wife is currently in isolation at the couple’s home.

ACT party officials say both Hamad and his wife are improving.
