All four al-Shabaab fighters that carried out the hotel attack in Mogadishu were killed by security forces, a police spokesman said on Monday.

The four, added to the five civilians that were killed in the attack, brings the total number of fatalities from the terrorist attack to nine.

“Nine people had been killed in the attack, four of them gunmen, while more than 10 others have been injured. We have ended the deadly siege in the capital,” Xinhua quotes Sadiq Adan, a police spokesman.

Adan confirmed that several government and security officials who had been trapped in the hotel were rescued alongside other civilians.

The Hotel Afrik attack was claimed by al-Shabaab, which has waged an Islamist war in the Horn of African nation for more than a decade.

Separately, James Swan, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia and head of the UN Assistance Mission in the country (UNSOM), denounced the “senseless attack”.
