Military officers killed in suicide bomb attack in Somalia

Senior military officers and civilians were killed and an unknown number of others were injured on Friday in a suicide bomb attack outside a local stadium in Galkayo, the central region of Somalia where Prime Minister Mohamed Roble was due to address a gathering, an official said.

Ismael Mukhtar Omar, the government spokesman said a suicide bomber wearing a suicide vest blew himself up outside the Abdullahi Isse Stadium in Galkayo where people had gathered to receive Roble ahead of his address.

“Military officers and civilians were killed and an unknown number injured in the attack. We will give you a full report once we have confirmed the number of casualties,” Omar told Xinhua on the phone.

He said the prime minister had not arrived at the stadium at the time of the attack.

Locals said several people were believed to have been killed in the latest attack in the Horn of Africa nation.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but Al-Shabaab which is fighting to overthrow the government usually stages such attacks.
