Kouadio Konan Bertin, who finished second to incumbent Alassane Ouattara in Cote D’Ivoire’s recent presidential election, will join the Outtara administration as head of the newly-created ministry of reconciliation.

In his inauguration speech, President Ouattara insisted that the new ministry would be responsible for helping strengthen national cohesion and reconciliation following October’s election.

Ouattara also instructed Prime Minister Hamed Bakayoko to resume discussions with rival political parties.

In the opinion of many observers, the failure of reconciliation after the post-electoral crisis of 2010-2011 is one of the failures of Ouattara’s first two terms in power.  Ouattara sees the creation of the ministry of reconciliation as an important step to ‘building a climate conducive to the revival of development in Côte d’Ivoire’.
