At least three Tanzanian fishermen were killed after their boat capsized in Lake Victoria, police said on Monday.
Richard Abwao, the Simiyu regional police commander, said the fishermen drowned on Sunday night.
“All the three fishermen were residents in Busega district and their bodies have been recovered,” Abwao told journalists.
Boat accidents are increasingly common on East Africa’s major lakes, including Lake Victoria, which is surrounded by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
Earlier this month, at least 10 people were killed in a boating accident on the lake near Honge Beach in western Kenya.
Last month, local media in Kenya reported that at least six people were feared dead after a boat they were traveling in capsized in Lake Victoria due to heavy winds and overloading.
