At the age of 19 Mpule won the 1999 Miss Universe beauty pageant. She used her platform to help in the fight against HIV/ AIDs. In 2000, she was appointed as the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDs in Sub-Saharan Africa.
