Namibia on Wednesday announced the outbreak of red locust in the central north Otjozondjupa region.

Percy Misika, the executive director in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, said the current wave of red locust in the Otjozondjupa region is detrimental to crops.

According to Misika, the latest outbreak comes after the ministry had successfully controlled another outbreak of the same type in the farming region of the Zambezi region.

“The ministry had successfully vanquished red locust in the Zambezi region but unfortunately the locusts also flies around a lot hence the latest outbreak in Otjozondjupa,” he said.

Misika added that the ministry had already deployed teams to the Otjozondjupa region to fight the spread of red locust.
