A team of Chinese medical experts has arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo to help the country fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
The team of 12, which was invited by President Felix Tshisekedi to support the country’s national task-force, arrive in the country as its COVID-19 infections exceed 1,100 and the death toll stands at 50.
The team includes 3 specialists who were involved in fighting against the COVID-19 outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
The deployment of the medical experts also serves as a show of strong China-DR Congo relations which have stood for years.
The Chinese Ambassador to the DR Congo Zhu Jing is confident the arrival of the Chinese experts will boost the country’s efforts in curbing further spread of COVID-19.
“We believe this medical team will come up with positive and concrete measures to help the Congolese officials deal with the Coronavirus in the two weeks that they’ll be here,” said Zhu.
Zhu’s sentiments were echoed by the DR Congo deputy minister for health, Albert Biyombo.
“This team of Chinese experts will work with our experienced medical teams to fight against this pandemic. We are confident that, together, we will limit the spread of the COVID-19,” said Biyombo.
