The captain of Tanzania’s national men’s football team Mbwana Samatta, made history on Tuesday when he became the first Tanzanian to play in the UEFA Champions League.
Samatta’s club KRC Genk of Belgium lost to Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg by a score of 6-2.
Samatta also made history by becoming the first Tanzanian to score in the tournament when he netted his side’s second goal.
Samatta scored in the 52nd minute through a diving header following a cross from the left by Theo Bongonda.
Samatta was a doubt for the clash after he picked up a knee injury during Tanzania’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Burundi on September 8.
Genk qualified automatically for the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time after winning the Belgian championship in 2018/2019.
With five goals in six league matches this season, Samatta is the Belgian First League’s joint top scorer.
Genk will play Oostende next in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday.
