At least 30 children have been killed after a fire incident which started on Tuesday night at a boarding school in a suburb outside the Liberian capital Monrovia, according to Reuters.

The fire reportedly broke out in a building connected to a mosque where the children were sleeping.

Liberian President George Weah took to social media to send his condolences to the families of the victims and asked the nation to keep them in their prayers.

“My prayers go out to the families of the children that died last night in Paynesville City; as a result of a deadly fire that engulfed their school building. This is a tough time for the families of the victims and all of Liberia. Deepest condolences go out to the bereaved,” President Weah said on his official Twitter account.

Police spokesman Moses Carter said the cause of the fire has not yet been established.

“The kids were learning the Koran when the fire broke out,” he added.

The police are conducting an operation to retrieve the bodies, according to reports by the BBC.
