6.5 magnitude earthquake hits Fukushima

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit Japan off the coast of Fukushima on Sunday morning, though there have not been any confirmed cases of casualties or serious damage.

The quake could be felt in Tokyo (about 250 kilometers away) struck roughly 40 kilometers off the east coast of the country, reaching a depth of approximately 50 kilometers.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has however said there is no tsunami forecast.

Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Japan, a country believed to be one of the world’s most seismically active areas.

Fukushima was abandoned in 2011 after another earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear meltdown.
