Liverpool’s Guinean midfielder Naby Keita will miss the rest of the season after sustaining an injury in Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona.
The 24-year-old was forced off midway through the first half in Camp Nou with what is understood to be a groin injury.
Liverpool signed Keita from German side Red Bull Leipzig in the summer, an acquisition that cost the Merseyside club £48million.
While he had a slow start in Liverpool, the Guinean midfielder has grown to become a key player in Jurgen Klopp’s side.
He has so far made 33 appearances in competitions for the Reds, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
Liverpool lost Wednesday’s game 3-0, with Lionel Messi netting a brace after Luis Suarez had but the Catalans ahead.
The result means Liverpool will have to beat Barcelona by more than three goals without response in next week’s return leg to be played at Anfield.
The other Champions League semi-final game saw Tottenham Hotspurs go down 1-0 to the season’s surprise package, Ajax.
